Les Miserables joy for leukaemia battling Valerie from Llangollen

Pictured is Valerie Hall at her home in Llangollen, who after researching her family tree discovered she is a distant relative of Russell Crowe who is co-starring in the new Les Mis blockbuster.

A trip to the cinema to see her long lost relative Russell Crowe in the blockbuster film Les Miserables will be just the tonic for a woman fighting leukaemia.

Valerie Hall, 66,  from Llangollen, came forward after an appeal to find relatives of the Oscar-winning Australian superstar by the manager of the Odeon cinema at Eagles Meadow in Wrexham.

The first five family members who can show a connection will each get a pair of tickets to see the  screen adaptation of Les Misérables, the hit 1980s musical based on Victor Hugo’s classic 19th-century novel.

The enthralling story of love, passion and redemption – nominated for a host of Oscars including Best Picture – is showing to packed audiences at the Odeon and is already promising to be the biggest film this year.

Gladiator star Crowe can trace his family roots to Wrexham where grandfather, John Crowe, ran the grocers, Crofruit, before emigrating to New Zealand in the mid-1920s.

Valerie had hoped to meet Crowe in 2009  when had been due to return to his family roots in Wrexham for the BBC Wales programme, Coming Home, but unfortunately the project fell through.

She said: “I believe  that Russell Crowe’s grandfather, John Edward Crowe, and my grandmother, Sarah Jane Crowe, were sister and brother.

“The family were big in the Wrexham area and spread out from there. There really is a great many Crowes in the area and beyond. But one thing that stands out and how you always know it’s a Crowe your talking to is the eyes.

“Those icy-blue eyes are a real family trait I’m afraid, all the Crowe’s have them, they are not just peculiar to Russell.”

She added: “I’d love to have the chance to meet him out of curiosity more than anything.”

And while Russell Crowe’s grandfather left Wrexham to start a new life in first New Zealand before finally settling in Australia, Valerie’s ancestors stayed closer to home moving to Liverpool where she spent much of her life.

She said: “My maiden name was Dovaston, a name I can trace back to the times of William the Conqueror. It
actually means ‘dark stump’!

“I moved to Llangollen 26 years ago and initially ran a guest house although I have worked at a care home, in a wine shop and as a charity worker too.

“I haven’t been in the best of health in the last few years and am currently taking a trial drug from America as I was diagnosed with a form of leukaemia known as Philadelphia chromosome.

“A trip to the Odeon at Eagles Meadow with my husband to see Les Misérables would be a real pick-me-up especially as there is that family connection, however distant it is.

“I do think Russell Crowe is a wonderful actor and it’s amazing to think we  share a common ancestry. I hope if he ever comes back to North Wales he drops in for a chat. I think I’d like to meet him now.”

Odeon Manager Andy Elvis was delighted to invite Valerie Hall to the cinema to see Les Misérables.

He said: “We have had a phenomenal response to our appeal for  relatives of Russell Crowe to come forward.

“Les Misérables is proving a big hit with Wrexham cinema goers and it’s certainly a wonderful film and deserves every one of its Oscar nominations. I think audiences are amazed at the sheer scale of the film.

“It’s a truly first class cinema experience and I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t seen it to book a seat and come along for a wonderful night’s entertainment.”

It was just what the doctors ordered.

Two top performers from Welsh National Opera gave an intimate performance just for the residents of Pendine Park care homes.

Doctors Diva and Divo – alias the “singing doctors” Zoe Milton Brown and David Graham – gave show-stopping performances in four one hour shows for residents of the care groups’ Bryn Bella, Bodlondeb, Penybryn, Cae Bryn and Hillbury homes.

The award winning care organisation is a Gold Community champion for their support of Welsh National Opera and its ground-breaking three year community project in Wrexham.

The homes also regularly welcome the Hallé orchestra as visitors.

Pendine Park’s artist in residence Sarah Edwards explained: “We thought this WNO project would translate well for our residents. We are very proud to be Gold Community Champions and have supported WNO in its ‘Nine Stories High’ project in Wrexham.

“The therapeutic values of music are well documented and it’s wonderful for some of the relatives to witness how it brings a smile to the faces of our residents.”

WNO corporate development officer, Catrin Joy said: “A group of our artistes have visited Wrexham Maelor Hospital singing to patients in a whole range of situations and it’s gone really, really well.”

WNO also plan community outreach projects in Caia Park this spring. “Last year we concentrated on the story of Wrexham and this year we are concentrating on the voice. The third year is in development and will bring together lots of little projects to show the Wonders of Wrexham,” said Catrin.

WNO’s Singing Doctors residency at the hospital will run until June. The project aims to use music to boost the health, well-being, sense of expression and community amongst residents, patients, visitors and staff, in hospitals and homes.

Soprano Zoë Milton-Brown (Dr Diva) was born in South Wales and graduated from Christ’s College, Cambridge, where she was a choral scholar.

She studied singing with Italian soprano Iris dell’Acqua before winning an entrance scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music.

She has performed in masterclasses in London and Vienna as well as being invited to appear in concerts and masterclasses in the Festival International d’Eté de Nice.

But at Pendine Park she was melting the heart of Highfield resident John Galley, formerly of Hoole, Chester.

John, who has MS, worked at Castrol in Stanlow for 30 years. “The music was very good, really professional and I really enjoyed it,” he said.

Senior care practitioner Tracy Green, who organises the Music Therapy at Pendine Park, was delighted that the residents had been given such a “wonderful musical tonic”.

She said: “The residents gain real pleasure and enjoyment out of music and it’s just fantastic that world class singers from WNO have come to support our projects to enrich people’s lives with disabilities through the medium of music .”

Songs from The Student Prince and West Side Story were also sparking memories for residents Joanne Davies and Eileen Lewis who were singing along with the handsome Dr Divo.

Tenor David Douglas was born in Ayrshire and trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and the Royal Northern College of Music. He has worked with companies as diverse as Buxton Opera Festival, Phoenix Opera, and Opera Engine.

“At the hospital we sang for patients in the Alzheimer’s ward, the cancer recovery ward, the mental health unit and the children’s ward. It was a really lovely experience,” he said.

More than 60 Pendine residents got the chance to listen and take part in the WNO workshop sessions.

They’ve already created some ice magic for Harry Potter and Harrods, the world’s most famous store.

Now the company which also provided a skating rink for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver is coming to Newcastle to create a winter wonderland – whatever the temperature.

They will be setting up the environmentally friendly, synthetic rink at the Silverlink Shopping Park, on the A1058 Coast Road.

It will be open from Saturday, February 9, to Sunday, February 24, and to celebrate some of the city’s brightest young skating stars will be putting on a spectacular show at the rink on the opening day from 2pm to 4pm.

The youngsters, aged seven and eight, are all from the Whitley Bay Ice Rink and are pupils of coach Karen Brannen, a local girl herself, who started skating aged just two and went on to be a member of the British Junior squad.

And Karen will be on hand at rinkside with helpful hints and tips on how to get the most out of the skating experience.

She said: “I started when I was only two because my older sister, Heather McDermott, was going to go to give her a bit of confidence as she was very shy.

“It worked for her too. She ended up playing ice hockey for Great Britain while I competed until I was 18 and was second in the Under-13 British Championships before I took up coaching and I love it, it’s so rewarding.”

Karen is on the ice every day at 5.30am with her young charges and is back at Whitley Bay Ice Rink in the evenings after work for more coaching – she still manages to look after husband Craig and sons Kieran and Lewis.

She said: “Ice skating is a sport for all ages. I coach little ones just two years old all the way up to people in their 60s who have just taken it up and they’re brilliant.

“At the ice rink we have skaters in their 80s and I can be ideal for older people because it is low impact and much easier than running. You’re never too late to start skating.”

Whitley Bay Ice Rink provides a variety of courses for all age groups and Karen, 32, has a few words of advice for anyone who fancies having a go at the Silverlink: “Just bend your knees and start walking with nice little marching steps and once you get your balance the gliding will come,” she said.

Amy Hodges, Marketing Manager for Silverlink Shopping Park, said: “It should be a lot of fun for shoppers on the day and I’m sure the young skaters will be inspirational.

“It will also be great to have Karen on hand to give some expert guidance so that even beginners will be able to have a go.

“Silverlink is such a popular shopping destination that I’m sure lots of people will be there and the ice rink should add to the buzz and atmosphere

The Reading based manufacturers, Ice Magic, installed a skating rink on the roof of the Harrods in London’s Knightsbride for their popular Christmas TV advert and have also supplied several of the Harry Potter films.

Worldwide Sales Director, Trevor Collins, says Ice Magic even provided one for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

He said: “This is as close as you can get to real ice but without the need for gas guzzling generators to keep everything frozen.

“Our skating rinks are also more user friendly as you don’t get a film of lying water on top which leaves anyone who falls down soaked to the skin.

“And as we supply the product to many professional skaters it shows it is as near as you can get to real ice.

According to Trevor, Ice Magic skating rinks have been used instead of real ice on numerous TV and film sets as well as the filming of commercials.

He said: “We were very pleased to be able to supply a skating rink to Harrods and it was used to film their Christmas TV and web campaign and our rinks also were used in several Harry Potter films.

“We have just launched in China and the rinks are already incredibly popular and are proving as big a hit as they already are in Japan. We are launching in the Lebanon and Dubai shortly too.

“The skating rinks are also proving very popular in really hot countries in regions such as the Caribbean as they can be used whatever the temperature.

“At the Silverlink, we will also have plastic penguins which toddlers can hold onto and be pushed around the rink. It’s a family friendly experience that will make shopping days that bit more fun.”

A ground-breaking care organisation has struck gold.

Wrexham-based Pendine Park has become one of only a handful of social care companies across the UK to receive the coveted Investors in People Gold Award.

The IIP success marked a unique double for the organisation.

It’s believed Pendine Park is the only care organisation in Britain to achieve the accolade while also having the ISO 9002 quality assurance accreditation.

Pendine Park was the first nursing home in the United Kingdom to be awarded ISO 9002 exactly 20 years ago, or  British Standard 5750 as it was known then.

The IIP Gold Award was presented to proprietors Mario Kreft MBE  and his wife, Gill, at a special ceremony by Wrexham AM Lesley Griffiths, who is also the Welsh Health Minister.

The event was attended by residents, relatives and staff representing all their seven care homes.

Lesley Griffiths said: “It’s always fantastic to hear about a good news story like this in the area and I was delighted to have the opportunity of presenting this richly deserved award to Pendine Park.

“I was previously Deputy Minister for Science, Innovation and Skills for 16 months and IIP was part of my portfolio so I know how much hard work and dedication is involved in achieving the gold standard.

“IIP Gold is a rare accolade and is recognition of the constant quest to innovate and raise standards.

“This is a tribute to everybody who works at Pendine Park because this award could not have been achieved without their commitment to developing a framework of best practice.

“Upskilling our workforce and developing them is really important if we want to provide the best possible care and the fact that Pendine Park has attained gold shows they take that very seriously and I’m delighted a Wrexham firm is once again at the forefront.”

Among those joining in the celebrations was residents’ representative Alan Hassall.

He said: “The Investors in People Gold Award shows that people are really getting cared for at the top level, no matter how disabled or enabled they are.

“The residents are helped to do things that they wouldn’t have been able to do on their own, and I think it’s lovely.

“When people mention care homes, you just think of old people going in there to sit in their chair all of the time – that’s not the case here because there are so many activities.”

It was a sentiment echoed by relatives’ representative Malcolm Crosbie whose beloved wife Audrey passed away recently.

Mr Crosbie added: “It’s yet another accolade for Pendine Park and it’s well deserved because I doubt you’d find a better place anywhere.”

It was a proud day for Mario and Gill, who was the main architect of the detailed IIP strategy which took in the whole organisation.

As part of the process, more than 80 members of staff were interviewed privately by the independent IIP assessor.

Mr Kreft said: “We’re absolutely delighted because it’s been such a team effort. It’s been a long journey, but we think it is exactly the right thing for care organisations to aim for and then hopefully to succeed in.

“To get the gold award you have to meet at least 165 of the 200 criteria and the team met a 178 of them.

“This is not about having a kite mark, it’s about creating an ethos and a structure that all of the team can believe in so that we can actually translate this to better services through better training and development opportunities for our people.

“This is a very rare accolade and we’re extremely pleased to be joining a very elite group of organisations in the UK.

“I would encourage all those involved in the social care sector to invest time in securing Investors in People accreditation.

“It naturally follows that achieving IIP recognition and sustaining it will ensure that standards in social care will continue to improve and will be consistent and that’s got to be good news for the customers, for the people who receive the services and their families.

“Our clear purpose and vision is very simple. It’s about ensuring the best care for people, the best possible development and training opportunities for our staff, being a stable and sustainable organisation and importantly being a sector leader, and I think today has shown that we are delivering on all of those for objectives.”
