Restaurant manager to the stars takes over at The Real China in Wrexham

A manager and DJ who helped tantalise the taste buds of Hollyoaks stars has taken the reigns at a top Chinese restaurant.

Jason Sheehan, 33 from Wrexham, who rubbed shoulders with Sarah George, and Twinnie-Lee Moore, who play the McQueen sisters in the hit Channel 4 show, is the new boss at The Real China, at Eagles Meadow shopping centre.

The buffet-style restaurant offers a mouth-watering selection of Asian delicacies alongside traditional Chinese dishes in a specialist food area.

The ex Maelor School pupil Jason, ran the Fiesta Havana cocktail restaurant in Chester, a favourite haunt of the Hollyoaks duo.

Jason, who is engaged to his partner Tara, and father of Oscar, three, and Charlie, one, said: “They were very down to earth and friendly. I’d try and get story lines out of them but they weren’t allowed to say anything because of their contracts.”

Jason’s career in catering began when he studies business and catering at Yale College (now Coleg Cambria), earning himself a clutch of NVQs.

He started deejaying in the local area at venues such as Central Station, before jetting to Greek island of Corfu to DJ at the famous B52 bar, where he eventually became manager.

Jason said: “I play all sorts of music – funky house, R n B, rock, soul, pop, anything that gets people moving.”

Jason is also a champion fighter, and has won the mixed martial arts (MMA) North Wales Open Championships.

He started doing Shotokan karate when he was seven-years-old, eventually becoming a black belt second dan.

He said: “I was looking for the next step so I started learning Brazilian jujitsu – things like submissions, grappling, ground moves, and Muay Thai which is kickboxing.

“You get a massive surge of adrenaline when you fight in a competition. I was very proud to win the North Wales Open.

“I train at Hustle Gym in Wrexham. I don’t compete anymore but I still train just for the love of it.

“Martial arts taught me a lot of lessons that I use in everyday life, and in my work – things like respecting others, restraint, discipline and keeping calm.”

He’s managed various other restaurants in Spain and the UK, and once owned his own hotel.

The new Real China manager is buzzing about his new challenge.

He said: “It’s really exciting. They were looking for a shift manager, but they looked at my CV, saw that I was overqualified and offered me a job as manager.

“What I’ll be focusing on the most is customer service because what we want to do is provide an enjoyable experience for customers every time. That way they’ll want to come back and we’ll get repeat business which is great.

“We have to make the product premium quality. We’ve hired new staff and we’ve got a new chef. Things are definitely moving in the right direction. We’re getting a lot of positive feedback from customers.

“We’ve recently obtained a 5 star cleanliness rating for our kitchen which we’re extremely proud of, because it’s a reflection of our high standards.

“We’ve started a new take away and delivery service which is registered with Just Eats. That way, customers can have our great food even if they can’t make it to the restaurant. We can do the catering for events, for example birthdays and anniversaries or any other party.

“We want The Real China to be more than just a restaurant. We want it to be part of the community. You see the same people a lot so little things like remembering people’s names are important, to make everyone feel special. People do appreciate that.

“I’m Wrexham born and bred so I understand what the locals want. It’s a place where everyone knows everyone.”

Hongchen Wu, who is proprietor of The Real China at Eagles Meadow alongside his best friend and business partner Sen Yang, believes Jason has the perfect mix of skills.

He said: “We wanted someone with local knowledge, and knows the local people and what they want and the service they expect. Jason definitely has that. He has the perfect skill set for us because he has run a lot of restaurants before. He’s bringing in a lot of new ideas.”

Ex Glyndwr University business student Hongchen, added: “I started at The Real China as a kitchen porter.

“We always wanted to own our own business but we wanted to gain some experience before we started up ourselves. We think getting the practical experience is very important. We want to combine that with the theoretical knowledge we gained at Glyndwr University to help us put the theory into practice.

“We are ready for the challenges that lie ahead. I feel really excited about the future, and am enthusiastic and passionate about the business. We are young and we have an intense drive to succeed. Our ambition is to open restaurants all over the UK.

“We have a lot of friends in Wrexham. The people here are very friendly.”

Eagles Meadow manager Kevin Critchely believes Jason will brings a lot to the table at The Real China.

He said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Jason on his new job. He obviously has a wealth of experience and high standards which can only be good for The Real China, and its customers.

“It’s a very exciting time for the restaurant and I’ll be watching how things develop over the coming months with interest.”

Cartrefi Conwy £3.4 million housing scheme will provide big jobs boost

Cartrefi Conwy Llanfairfechan.

A housing association has unveiled plans for a £3.4 million development of 27 new homes in Llanfairfechan.

Cartrefi Conwy revealed the scheme in Penmaenmawr Road, will support up to 120 jobs and provide a boost to the local economy.

As part of the consultation process, local residents were invited to have a look at the plans at an exhibition at Llanfairfechan Town Hall.

Cartrefi Conwy Llanfairfechan.

They will be applying for planning permission to build a mix of one, two and three bedroom houses and apartments.

According to David Kelsall, Cartrefi Conwy’s Development and New Business Manager, the proposed development will help regenerate the town.

He emphasised they had a strict policy of ensuring construction industry partners use local trades people, supply chains and offer apprenticeships to local young people.

Mr Kelsall added: “If we get planning permission we would envisage starting construction work in May 2015 and would hope to complete all the properties within 18 months. The land on which the development will be built has previously been subject to consultation prior to inclusion in the Local Development Plan.

“This scheme will support valuable jobs both directly with the trades people on site as well as supporting employment via the ancillary services including the local supply chain. In addition, we will see a number of young people offered apprenticeships within the construction industry.

“There is a strong private rental sector across much of North Wales but in Conwy County Borough there is a distinct lack of affordable rental housing options.

“We have carefully assessed the need for more homes in the area. Llanfairfechan simply does not have enough affordable rented properties available, especially for people wishing to downsize to smaller homes and remain within the town.

“Importantly, five of the properties will be available at an intermediate rent level which equates to approximately 80 percent of the market rent.

“These properties will be aimed at working young professionals who may earn too much to qualify for social housing but insufficient to be able to buy or rent in the private sector.

“There is no legal requirement for us to consult local people before the planning process begins but we appreciate their feedback and are pleased to be able to allay some fears and misconceptions.”

Gwynne Jones, Cartrefi Conwy’s Director of Operations, was pleased so many residents came along.

He said: “We value their feedback and local knowledge, allowing this information to be taken into consideration before final planning application is submitted.

“Cartrefi Conwy isn’t just about the bricks and mortar of building homes but we will be supporting and investing in the local community for the long term.”

If the plans are given the green light, the construction work will be carried out by Conwy-based Beech Developments alongside Brenig Construction.

Llanfairfechan residents Keith Hallowes and Bryan Hughes, who run a B&B adjacent to the site, went to view the plans for themselves.

Mr Hallowes said: “I’m very pleased we have had this early opportunity to see what is planned and to be able to give our views.

“I need to go away now and think carefully about the plans and how they will affect us and the village as a whole.”

Bryan Hughes added; “I now have a clearer view and need to consider carefully the impact on our business and the wider community.”

Mike Roberts, Managing Director of Beech Developments, said: “I am really pleased we are working with Cartrefi Conwy on this development. Like Beech Developments, they are very forward thinking and innovative organisation who are committed to investing and supporting regeneration to communities throughout Conwy”.

A company celebrating its 20th anniversary has saved its customers over £5 million in energy costs.

The news was revealed to Clwyd West AM Darren Millar during a visit to the Ruthin-based Energy Company to help them celebrate the business milestone.

The company formed by directors John Davies and Colin Pritchard has specialised in finding the best energy deals in electricity and gas for their business customers in since the mid-1990s and in the commercial sector alone estimates to have saved businesses in excess of £5 million.

They employ eight people at their own offices on the Lon Parcwr Industrial Estate, with 20 agents representing them throughout the UK, and look after over 3,000 business contracts which use 142.8 gigawatts of electricity and 43.9 gigawatts of gas annually.

Many of their customers have been with them since before deregulation in the late 1990s and John Davies said: “We have a loyal customer base who tell their friends about us. We tell our customers to tell us if any issues arise whilst with us. In that way we offer a ‘hands on’ service that is unbeatable.”

Major clients include a major KFC franchise, a new Starbucks franchise with plans to open 20 sites, a company running 20 nursing homes in Shropshire and Cheshire, and even the monks of Caldy Island in the Bristol Channel.

John Davies said: “We have also extended our service to domestic customers in the last six months after being inundated with requests from our clients in the business sector – at the end of the day they have homes and wanted to make similar savings in their own energy costs.”

Darren Millar, the Conservative Shadow Health spokesperson, said he was hugely impressed by the savings that The Energy Company had helped customers make.

He added: “Saving money is great for the economy because it gets it out in the shops and recirculating locally.

“I’m delighted that The Energy Company is going from strength to strength and saving businesses in this area and around the UK money on their energy bills and I wish them every success.

“Saving money in these difficult times has to be a good thing and this is a recession-proof business because people will always want the best deals they can get on energy.”

The company have also launched their own domestic checking website, www.theenergycompany, in response to requests from business customers who asked about competitive prices for their own home utilities and also many members of the public keen to save money.

The site, is ‘all of market’ and fully accredited to the OFGEM Confidence code. It has proved to be a moneysaver with reports of savings all over the UK. One homeowner has saved a massive £1866 a year whilst average savings are currently coming out around £142.

The announcement from energy giants EON that they were reducing their gas prices immediately has put more onus than ever on homeowners to investigate their bills and when Darren Millar trialled the Energy Company website they found him a money saving deal as well.

Part of the service the Energy Company provides is dealing with miss-billing issues and recent successes include winning a rebate of over £20,000 for the monks of Caldey Island on their energy bills a reduction in bills of over £40,000 for the popular Cyfnod Café in Bala and a £16,500 refund for Welsh language teaching company Popeth Cymraeg.

Superstar tenor Alfie Boe promises musical magic in North Wales

Layout 1

Superstar tenor Alife Boe is heading back to North Wales.

The classical heart-throb, who has sold one and a half million records, been at number one in the classical charts many times and performed on Broadway, will be taking centre stage at this year’s Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

Boe, dubbed Britain’s Favourite Tenor, will be performing songs from musical theatre and movies at the glitzy evening concert on Thursday, July 9.

Joining him will be Welsh singer Sophie Evans, who went on to star as Dorothy in the West End production of The Wizard of Oz having finished runner-up in the TV talent show Over the Rainbow, classical saxophonist Amy Dickson along with Jonathan Antoine, the classically trained tenor who rose to fame on Britain’s Got Talent.

The concert is being sponsored by the award-winning care organisation Pendine Park that’s celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Proprietor Mario Kreft MBE said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to sponsor what promises to be a magical night of musical entertainment in such an important year for Pendine Park.”

The festival’s musical director, Eilir Owen Griffiths, said: “I’m thrilled Alfie Boe has agreed to headline what will be an absolutely fantastic evening concert. Alfie’s unforgettable West End performances as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables were critically acclaimed and rightly so.

“This isn’t his first appearance at Llangollen of course and audiences have always responded to him, he is definitely a firm favourite. But this will be the first time we have had a concert which will specifically celebrate musical theatre and movie themes. It will be a wonderful night and one not to be missed.”

For his part, Boe was delighted to have the opportunity to return to the Llangolllen stage, following in the footsteps of his hero, the legendary Luciano Pavarotti.

He said: “It’s a lovely festival, that’s why I keep going back. This will be my third visit I think.

“There is always a great audience and I know they will be up for a good night. I have always had a great reception at Llangollen.

“The programme will include some of the top songs from a great many of the very best musical theatre shows and film scores. And of course there will be a few surprises too.”

Boe’s concert will be one of the highlights of another packed week which will begin on Tuesday with Children’s Day and the Parade of Nations, led by Eisteddfod President Terry Waite before the evening Heart of Llangollen concert featuring a galaxy of international talent.

Highlights of Wednesday will include the debut of the International Young Musician of the Year and the Children’s Choir of the World while Thursday’s competitions will see another first, the International Voice of Musical Theatre Trophy.

Friday’s Open Category for choirs will showcase styles like gospel, barbershop, jazz, pop and glee styles and will also see the International Voice of the Future decided with the prize including the chance to sing at one of the evening concerts the future.

The Blue Riband event, the Choir of the World for the Pavarotti Trophy, is decided on Saturday night as well as the Lucile Armstrong Dance Final and Sunday sees the Eisteddfod let its hair down for Llanfest before the climactic final concert.

Meanwhile, Boe has a hectic few months ahead before he arrives at Llangollen including the world premiere of a “symphonised” version of The Who’s rock classic Quadrophenia at the Royal Albert Hall.

He was born in the Lancashire fishing port of Fleetwood to an Irish mother and a Norwegian father and was the youngest of nine children.

His big break came when he was spotted by a businessman singing operatic arias as he cleaned cars in his job as a trainee mechanic.

The businessman, who had links in the music industry, suggested Boe audition for a London opera company which he did and that proved a turning point as he was quickly accepted.

So he upped sticks, moved to London and studied singing at the Royal College of Music, the national Opera Studio and joined the Royal Opera House’s Vilar Young Artists Programme.

He went on to conquer the world’s most prestigious opera stages, lead the cast of Les Miserables for nearly a year, and steal the show at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Last year he appeared on our small screens, starring in ITV’s biggest programme of the winter, Mr Selfridge, as music-hall singer Richard Chapman, and last year saw the release of his best-selling autobiography, My Story.

Now 41, Boe is married to Sarah, whom he met in San Francisco while rehearsing for La Boheme, and they have two children.

He added: “I certainly had a lucky break when the guy suggested I audition for an opera company. I’ve been so lucky but it has also been hard work.

“There have been so many highlights from the West End to New York but I suppose one of the best moments was singing on the balcony at Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert.

“It’s not every day you get to sing at Buckingham Palace. It was just a wonderful occasion. I sang ‘Somewhere’ from West Side Story alongside American soprano Renee Fleming. Now that would be a song I’d love to sing at Llangollen.”

The feelgood atmosphere of the Eisteddfod field through the week as hundreds of competitors and thousands of visitors mingle with spontaneous performances breaking out.

Visitors can enjoy live music at the 200-seat S4C Stage, join in with dance workshops or just soak up the heady atmosphere throughout the week world-class competitors perform in a spectacular celebration of cultures with stunning choral music and lively traditional dance, especially on Folk Friday when the outdoor stages will feature world-class music and dance.
