Work has started on a £2.3 million social housing development in Rhyl.

Award-winning builders Anwyl Construction have begun the construction of 24 homes, 16 houses and eight flats, for Wales & West Housing, on the former ITT factory site on Cefndy Road in the town.

This is the second phase of a major mixed use project to bring homes and jobs to the 3.3 acre site where Anwyl built a 14,000 square foot commercial building two years ago, part of which now houses kitchens giant Howdens Joinery.

The new housing is made up of four detached and 12 semi-detached homes and two blocks of four apartments each.

Anwyl have also worked with Natural Resources Wales and will include a flood defence wall and other flood alleviation works.

Site Manager Stephen Langford, from Old Colwyn, said: “Work is going well and very smoothly so far and the first houses are now going up above lintel level so we’ve had scaffolders in now as well as bricklayers and groundworkers.”

Anwyl Director Tom Anwyl said: “The Rhyl Trade Park on Cefndy Road is a new development of the former ITT site where televisions were formerly made but which had been derelict for several years.

“This is the second phase of a mixed development of commercial property and housing and we’re delighted to be working in partnership again with Wales & West Housing to bring much-needed new housing to the area.

“It is the first major private sector development in Denbighshire for a number of years and underlines our commitment to Rhyl.

“We have also consulted closely with the local community, with schools and other organisations, to minimise the impact of the build on them.”

The project has also been backed by Denbighshire County Council and the Chairman, Councillor Brian Blakeley, from Rhyl, said: “I’m very pleased this development is going ahead and it’s another example of strong partnership working.

“This was a derelict site and now it’s providing homes and jobs too.”

Anne Hinchey, Chief Executive of Wales & West Housing, said: “This is a fantastic new development of energy efficient, warm and affordable homes which will improve the area.

“It provides an answer to the need for affordable housing in Rhyl as well as boosting the economy and giving the local community work and training opportunities.

“Funding from the Welsh Government and our partnership with Denbighshire County Council has made this possible.

“Affordable housing is more important now than ever and this project will help make a real difference.”

A top bakery has invested £2 million in a state of the art production line to make crumpets – creating 36 jobs in the process.

The new line at the Village Bakery in Wrexham is making the first sourdough crumpets on the market in the UK at the rate of 15,000 an hour.

It’s been installed at one of the family firm’s two bakeries on Wrexham Industrial Estate.

Twelve new members of staff have already been recruited bringing the total workforce to more than 350, including their other bakery in Minera on the outskirts of the town.

By next Spring they’re hoping to ramp up production so that the new line is running 24/7 and being operated by three shifts.

When it’s at full capacity the company will need to recruit another 24 workers to run it.

The crumpets will be sold under the Village Bakery’s own brand and in supermarkets across the UK.

The investment marks a fitting climax to a big year in the history of the company which is celebrating its 80th anniversary and is building a new Baking Academy at their site on Wrexham Industrial Estate.

The sourdough crumpets are the latest in a number of new products they’ve unveiled during the last 12 months.

Managing director Robin Jones said: “We’ve developed a sourdough crumpet which is the first on the market.

“Sourdough is a mixture of flour and water and it’s fermented over a period of time. Over that period of time it produces lactic acid which gives it a certain flavour and it doesn’t taste sour, it just tastes lovely and bready and how a crumpet should be and how crumpets tasted 80 years ago.

“The new crumpets sum up our approach. When we develop a new recipe, we’re looking at the past for our future and we’re just taking those old methods and producing them in high volume using traditional methods allied to the best modern technology.

“This is the Rolls Royce of crumpet machines and all credit to our engineering team for installing the production line in record time. They’ve moved mountains and I’m over the moon with what they’ve done.

“We’ve had a fantastic year, some great, great highlights and it’s always nice to squeeze one extra thing in before the year ends and this is the rabbit out of the hat which we’ve turned around in record time.”

Among the new recruits is production operator Craig Herling, 20, from Marchwiel, a former agency worker who was delighted to join the Village Bakery.

He said: “The Village Bakery is hugely successful it’s up and coming so it’s a good time to start your trade here.

“I have tasted the crumpets and they’re fantastic. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for me to build a new career as a baker.”

Shrewsbury shops expect over a million to join the Christmas rush

Kevin Lockwood, manager Darwin Cenre, Pride Hill, Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury’s busy Darwin and Pride Hill Shopping Centres are expecting well over a million shoppers through their doors this month.

Retailers are in the middle of their busiest month of the year in the run-up to Christmas with footfall expected to be up by over 30 per cent and over £70 million to go through the tills.

At Monsoon, in the Darwin centre, Supervisor Amy Dunkerley said they expect to be about 40 per cent busier than in a normal month.

She added: “December is certainly our busiest month and it carries over into the first part of January as well and over the next couple of weeks we would expect to see sales up by about 40 per cent.

“Party dresses are the big sellers, particularly our lace dress which comes in three different colours, and also Christmas decorations and sleepwear too.”

At fashion store Roman, in the Pride Hill Centre, they are getting ready for their second Christmas in Shrewsbury after having a busy time last year and manager Trish Grace said: “Last year was our first here and it went very well and we’re hoping to do even better this time.

“It’s already getting lively which is good and we’re enjoying it. The Christmas decorations are up and looking good and we’re ready.

“Partywear is popular, especially a lot of red and black and also gold and metallic, especially with all the events taking place at this time of year.”

At Ann Summers in the Darwin Centre they’re also looking forward to their busiest time of the year and a spokesperson said: “We do really well in December – it can be double or even treble what we usually do.

“Lingerie is a big seller for us and we’ve got our new look Sexy Santa outfits in and we’ve also got an Elf costume this year which is proving popular.”

Kevin Lockwood, Manager of the Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside Shopping Centres, said: “This is a key time for retailers and we’re really looking forward to it and expecting a busy month.

“We would expect over a million shoppers in the Darwin Centre and half a million in Pride Hill and that’s something like 40 per cent more than in an average month.

“We’ve got late night opening, the Lantern Parade will kick things off next week and we’ve got the Grotto in the Darwin centre this year so it’s all set for a successful Christmas.”

North Wales: Ex-Gladiator Jet tackles childhood obesity at Spire Healthcare

Spire Healthcare, Abergele Pictured is Psychotherapist Diane Youdale with Manager Andrea Carri

A former Gladiator is going into battle against childhood obesity in Abergele.

Diane Youdale, best known for her role as Jet in the hit TV series Gladiators, will be holding workshops at Spire Healthcare Consulting Rooms on the outskirts of the town.

She will work alongside the private hospital’s consultants helping patients tackle obesity and other health issues.

Diane, 44, spent four years as Jet in the cult 1990s TV series Gladiators.

The popular show saw contestants from all walks of life take on super-fit Gladiators in a series of physical challenges, winning points and a place in the final event, The Eliminator.

However, a fall during a live unscreened 1996 show as she tackled a contender resulted in a back injury and trapped nerves in her neck.

As a result, she retired from the hugely popular TV series and qualified as a psychotherapist and pilates instructor.

Now she says she is looking forward to working at the Spire Healthcare Consulting Rooms on the North Wales Business Park where she will be delivering her own “Core Philosophy” workshops to patients.

The move has been made possible because Spire Yale Hospital is doubling the size of its Consulting Rooms.

They have taken over the first floor of the building where they have been based on the ground floor since 2009.

The expansion will also enable Spire to introduce a number of new services, including non-surgical cosmetic and beauty treatments.

Other services available will include acupuncture, sports massage, pilates, yoga and chiropody.

Diane said: “I’m so looking forward to working with patients and particularly helping tackle childhood obesity. It’s all about introducing exercise and improving the health and well-being of young people.

“It’s also about introducing the right diet and showing people that if they eat rubbish, then, the chances are, they are going to feel rubbish. Sometimes it can be that simple. But it’s also important to have fun and enjoy exercise. Working with Spire Healthcare is going to be something really positive.

“I was always very much into fitness and was probably one of the UK’s first qualified personal fitness trainers in 1991. When Gladiators started on TV we really didn’t have a fitness industry in the UK.

“After I left Gladiators, and I left partly through my injury but also because I really didn’t want to put my own health and well-being at risk purely for the entertainment of others, I decided to move away from pure fitness and study to qualify as a psychotherapist.

“I developed Core Philosophy as a way of helping people think about their minds and bodies and to improve their well-being through fun exercise and eating the right things.

“At Spire Healthcare I will spend two days a week at the Abergele Consulting Rooms working alongside consultants and delivering workshops to help make patients feel good about themselves, both mentally and physically.”

Andrea Carri, manager of Spire Healthcare Consulting Rooms was delighted Diane Youdale will be in the centre’s new North Wales Cosmetic Suite.

She said: “We have doubled the size of our Abergele Consulting Rooms by taking over the upper floor of the building. We are now able to offer nurse-led non-surgical beauty and cosmetic treatments using Elemis, Dermalogica and Mesoastetics as part of our service.

“We are thrilled to have Diane on board. She is keen on nutrition and exercise and will work with our paediatricians on child obesity. There is also scope for her to work with other consultants on a number of health issues, such as stroke rehabilitation.

“Diane is so enthusiastic and without doubt she is going to make a real difference. She will be working closely with consultants who know precisely what skills she can bring to the table.

“I’m really excited about working with her and seeing the difference her Core Philosophy workshops will make to the lives of our patients.”

Spire Yale Hospital Director Sue Jones, said: “The new space we have available at our Abergele Consulting Rooms gives us the opportunity to expand our services.

“We are now able to offer holistic treatments, massage, spa therapies, skin treatments and medical chemical peels alongside nutrition, diet and fitness sessions.

“Diane has a great deal to offer and I am sure she will make a significant difference to the lives of patients. I am delighted that we have also brought in a personal trainer to work alongside Diane in helping deliver individual exercise plans.

“The Spire North Wales Cosmetic Suite is aiming to provide a service that will help our patients not only look better but also feel better about themselves by giving them the professional advice and guidance they need.”
