Recipe for economic success in Conwy

Chef Mike Evans with Anna Openshaw and Laura Fisher, centre.

A top chef who’s tantalised the taste buds of the Queen and many other members of the royal family is cooking up a recipe for economic success in Conwy.

Mike Evans, Head Chef at Coleg Llandrillo, in Llandrillo yn Rhos, will be showcasing the fine food produced in the county at the first ever Conwy Business Awards on Friday, May 9.

The aim of the glittering occasion at the at Eirias Events Centre, in Colwyn Bay, is to show the world that Conwy is the perfect place for companies to thrive and prosper.

The organisers are teaming up with the Conwy Cynhaliol (Sustainable Conwy) project which promotes food and drink producers in the county under the Naturally Conwy Valley brand.

They have enlisted the help of Mike, who is the coach of the Junior Welsh Culinary Team and a Vice-President of the Welsh Culinary Association.

On the night he’ll be joined by two other talented chefs, Steve Roberts the former head chef at Llandudno’s St George’s Hotel who now runs his own restaurant, The Cliffs at Rhyd y Foel, near Abergele, and his son, Jonathan Evans, who’ll be at home taking a break from his job in Australia as head chef at the prestigious C Restaurant, in Perth.

Together, they’ll be cooking a feast for the 250 guests at the ceremony using local food, including  a ham hock terrine, stuffed lamb loin and ginger ice cream with rhubarb panacotta.

Organiser Anna Openshaw, Conwy Rural Business Support Project Manager, explained: “Following the success of the Rural Business Awards we’re now extending it to the whole of Conwy so we’ve got the whole of Conwy Business Awards.

“We’ve joined forces with Conwy Cynhaliol and food on the night will be provided by Naturally Conwy Valley.

“We’re truly blessed in rural Conwy with the fantastic array of produce. We have the right people and the right environment to produce a wide range of food and drink.

“The land, in the right hands, is ideal for raising high quality beef and lamb which is presented expertly by our local butchers. Seasonal fruit and vegetables flourish here too and the variety is remarkable.  We also have three rural breweries and a major yoghurt manufacturer, illustrating the strength in depth of our food and drink sector.

“Then there is the home grown talent creating new food and drink products all the time, with skill, passion and pride.

“The Conwy Business Awards is the perfect opportunity to showcase the talent and the produce and all we have in the Conwy Valley.

“It’s been the best kept secret up to now so we’re trying to push it as much as we can. We do need to shout it from the hill tops because what we have here is wonderful, not just for visitors but for also for local people who want local options.

“The support that all the producers are having from Conwy Cynhaliol is making a difference and this is a unique chance to put them directly in touch with local hotels, guest houses and restaurants.”

According to Laura Fisher, the Marketing Officer for the Conwy Cynhaliol project, a survey had revealed many of the local restaurants and hotels were buying their food from suppliers outside the area.”

She added:  “A lot of them said that they’d like to source their ingredients locally but that they didn’t know what was available.

“Our mission is to promote local produce not just because it supports the rural economy and communities, but because it is also a great opportunity for the local tourism sector to capitalise on the local identity. The quality of what Conwy is producing is amongst the very best.”

Mike Evans, who also competes for the Senior Welsh Culinary Team, has cooked for a whole host of VIPs including the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles, during his distinguished career.

He’s passionate about the importance of using local produce and sees the awards ceremony as the perfect shop window for what Conwy has to offer.

Mike said: “We’re going to get some students involved so they get an idea of running a function for 250 people.

“The food that’s available right on our doorstep is just fantastic, the quality and variety is just amazing.

“The whole idea of local sourcing and traceability is so much more important these days and I am convinced that our brilliant produce can help  provide a recipe for economic success in Conwy.”

Go Compare tenor Wynne Evans can’t wait for first taste of panto magic

Top tenor Wynne Evans will be making his pantomime debut – as if by magic.

Wynne, who famously plays flamboyant opera star Gio Compario in the gocompare.com insurance ads, will play the role of the Evil Mirror in Snow White at the Stiwt Theatre.

Earlier in the year, he will be starring with opera superstar Bryn Terfel in a landmark production of Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street which is the curtain raiser for the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in July.

According to Wynne, he can’t wait to make his first ever pantomime appearance.

He will be using the magic of theatre to appear each night as the face and voice of the mirror.

He said: “I love pantomime but it’s not something, it’s a totally different discipline to opera of course.

“Having said that, Christmas simply isn’t Christmas without panto and, even though my part will be pre-recorded, I will be travelling up to Rhos with my children to see the production.

“It promises to have plenty of good laughs and I know it’s going to be a very good production. I can’t yet say what is in the script, we are keeping that under wraps so as not to spoil the show.

“However, I think it’s pretty safe to say Gio Compario will be making an appearance.

“I know the cast is going to be stellar and it is going to be one of the region’s top panto’s and a show not to be missed.”

Wynne, 42, who was born in Carmarthen, was an established opera star long before he was picked to play Gio Compario for the Go Compare TV ads and has performed at many of the world’s top venues including the Royal Albert Hall.

Snow White at the Stiwt will cap a busy year for Wynne who will interrupt a July run of Covent Garden performances, in which he will play Airadne in the Richard Strauss opera, Auf Naxos, to dash to Llangollen to perform alongside Bryn Terfel.

Lee Kelly, who runs Liverpool-based LHK Productions, is returning to the Stiwt again this Christmas with his updated and fun version of the traditional Snow White family tale.

He said: “We are just casting the show but I really wanted to make sure we had Wynne Evans on board right from the outset. He might not be on stage in person but will appear, by the magic of theatre, as the Evil Mirror for each and every one of the 37 planned performances. I don’t want to give too much away with regard to the script but Wynne will be appearing as his now famous Gio Compario character.

“Wynne really is a huge name, not just because of the gocompare.com TV ads but his wonderful opera performances too. We are privileged to have managed to secure his services and look forward to going through the script with him.”

“Snow White is something special and is definitely a family favourite. It delivers a mix of fun and traditional pantomime, it’s the same recipe which made last year’s Stiwt show, Jack and the Beanstalk such a massive runaway hit.

Lee who has worked with top international stars including Kylie Minogue, Geri Halliwell and Boy George, added: “It’s a timeless tale. Snow White tells the story of a beautiful princess and her jealous step mother, obsessed with getting rid of Snow White and becoming the fairest of them all.

“After fleeing the kingdom to escape the queen’s evil plans, Snow White seeks refuge with seven dwarfs living in the forest. Taking pity on the girl, the dwarfs allow her to stay with them.

“Complete with song and dance Snow White will have you on the edge of your seat. But will she get to return home and marry her Prince Charming and live happily ever after?”

Snow White will at the Theatr Stiwt from Wednesday, December 10. And there is a £10 offer on all tickets until June 30.

Makeover boost for breast cancer patients at Wrexham shopping centre

Eagles Meadow Shopping Centre, Wrexham

A support group for women who have been treated for breast cancer got a boost when specially trained beauty experts gave them a make-over.

Beauty consultants Ceri Evans and Emma Nadin at Boots in Wrexham’s Eagles Meadow Shopping Centre have been trained to provide support for cancer patients as part of the long-standing partnership between the chemists and Macmillan Cancer Support.

They swapped their usual place on the shop floor to head for the town’s Nightingale House and Wrexham Breast Cancer Support group, where Teresa Williams was their model for the night.

The 64-year-old  was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2010 after finding a large lump while doing her routine check but the thought of a new grandchild made her determined to tackle the disease.

“When I was diagnosed, the thing that kept me going was seeing my second grandchild born –  my son Bryan already had a daughter Imogen, who is now seven.  I am so pleased that I was able to meet her sister Evie, who is now two,” said Teresa from Poplar Road, Rhostyllen.

“I underwent a mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy at the Shooting Stars centre. Because my cancer was hormone linked I was on Herceptin – however, I had to stop it because I also have a heart condition.

“My husband Chris, who is a taxi driver, along with my son Bryan and his wife Sian were so supportive. My daughter Tracey has cerebral palsy and lives with 24-hour support, and there were times when I was too ill to go and see her.”

While Teresa was being treated for cancer, the mum-of-two faced another blow – she was made redundant from her job in the office of Wrexham’s TJ Hughes Store, when the chain went into liquidation.

“I don’t work now because I get tired so easily,” said Teresa. “I joined the support group a couple of years ago because there are times when you need to talk to somebody going through the same thing as yourself, no matter how long it is since your treatment,”  said Teresa.

“It was fascinating being given the make-over by Ceri and Emma. When you have lost your hair, on your head, your face and elsewhere, you also lose your self-confidence, and it was useful to learn how to deal with that. Also, your skin gets very sensitive, from the drugs, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, and not every beauty consultant understands that.”

In a recent survey, over three quarters of women said the visible side effects of cancer treatment had a negative impact on their confidence, while more than two thirds said they didn’t know how to disguise them.

That’s why the network of Boots Macmillan Beauty Advisors was introduced. For Boots No 7 beauty consultant Ceri, the Feel More Like You service run with MacMillan is a natural extension of the skincare advice she regularly gives to customers.

“It’s a chance to pamper the customer, whether here in the store or in a private room. Taking off a wig or a head scarf in public can be difficult for somebody going through cancer treatment and who has lost their hair and  maybe their eyebrows and lashes,” said Ceri, who has worked with Boots for 35 years.

“The customer is under no obligation to buy any of the products we use or recommend, it’s just a chance for them to relax, take time to talk about how the cancer is affecting their skin, and how it’s affecting them emotionally as well. I want them to feel great by the time they leave,” added Ceri, who lives in Rhosddu.

Emma added: “We need to let more people know about this service, which is a way of getting over the taboo subject which cancer can still sometimes be.

“The makeovers are all about making people feel good about them and we are delighted to provide this free facility in our store.”

The Wrexham Breast Cancer Support Group was set up by Barbara George and Pauline Harding, who have both been through treatment for the disease.

“We meet the first Tuesday of the month at Nightingale House, and the members include those who have just been diagnosed through to those now undergoing treatment, and others who have been treated a few years ago.

“I thought the makeover by Ceri and Emma was fantastic – it was a real help for members to be with somebody who understood their needs. When you are a low time like this you need something to boost your confidence. I’d definitely recommend the service,” added Barbara, who lives in Minera Road, near Cefn y Bedd.

Boots UK colleagues and customers have raised £6 million since the partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support began, and are continuing to raise significant funds for the charity to help to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.

Over 1,000 Boots colleagues have so far given their time to volunteer for Macmillan since the partnership began by supporting local events, campaigning and providing practical and emotional support.

The Macmillan-trained counsellors can also offer advice to those whose partners or relatives are undergoing treatment but don’t feel able to see a beauty consultant.

Chemotherapy can affect finger and toe nails, make them brittle or discoloured, develop lines or ridges, or even fall out. The steroids that are often given with the treatment makes skin prone to spots, similar to acne, or reddening, and can make people allergic to their usual underarm deodorants or their favourite perfume.

Hormonal therapies can cause hair loss or thinning, dry skin, rashes and spots, while targeted therapies can cause the hair to thicker or longer over their body.

Eagles Meadow Manager Kevin Critchley said: “I take off my hat to Ceri, Emma and the rest of the team at Boots. This is a wonderful initiative that is making a positive difference to people at a difficult time in their lives.”

Adrenalin-fuelled new watersport set to make a big splash in Conwy

DSC_0318 (2) ceidiog

Dare devil visitors will get the chance to be the first in Wales to try out a spectacular new type of watersport set to make a big splash in Conwy.

The company that brought flyboarding – already tried by Hollywood stars like Leonardo DeCaprio, Tom Cruise and Vin Diesel – to the UK will be showcasing the adrenalin-fuelled craze for the first time at the All Wales Boat Show.

One of the highlights for visitors at this year’s show, to be staged at Conwy Quay Marina from May 30 to June 1, will be the opportunity to try flyboarding themselves with expert instructors in the safe waters of the marina.

A flyboard is a type of water jetpack connected by a long hose to a powerful jet-ski through which gallons of water are pumped at high pressure.

Water is shot out through jet nozzles beneath the feet of the rider who can be lifted up to 15 metres in the air. By using two hand jets the rider can change the direction of their flight.

It’s been described as flying like a bird while swimming like a dolphin and more accomplished flyboarders can go on to perform manoeuvres like spins, back-flips and dives.

According to Mike Dear, whose company, the Dumfries-based Wetjets, pioneered the sport in Britain, it’s something which is rapidly catching on across the world and is popular with people of all ages.

Mike, 41, who is head of sales and training, said: “The flyboard was invented in the spring of 2011 by a French watercraft rider called Franky Zapata.

“My family and I were looking at a few different options for starting a business and we heard about flyboarding. It sounded like something that was exciting and a real novelty, so we decided to bring it to Britain.

“We’ve also demonstrated it at a couple of boat shows but bringing it to Conwy will be the first time it has been available to try at a show in Wales.

“What my family and I love about flyboarding is that it’s brand new, gives you a real adrenalin buzz and isn’t that difficult to learn. I’d say most people can be up and be flying within about 10 minutes and self-sufficient after three or four lessons.

“Some big-name stars have been spotted trying it and I think it would lend itself perfectly to an action movie like a Bond film – with weapons attached!

“It’s also a sport virtually anyone can do providing they don’t have any health problems. For safety reasons we’ve set a lower age limit of 16 but last March we had a guy of 67 doing it on Loch Auchenreoch, near Dumfries, which was still partially frozen at the time.

“Guys and girls are equally enthusiastic about it but I find that, because they tend to be less excitable than men, girls are easier to teach.”

Mike said that Wetsjets would have flyboards available for anyone to try on all three days of the All Wales Boat Show, offering a 10-minute lesson for just £40.

He said: “For many people this will be a one-time-only chance to give it a go and I’m hoping that once they’ve tried it they’ll get an appetite to for the sport.

“As there aren’t too many people who are good at it in the UK at the moment there’s even the possibility they could go on to take part in the British Championships, due to be held this autumn at a venue yet to be arranged, and perhaps even the World Championships.

“We’re all really looking forward to coming to the All Wales Boat Show to showcase this fantastic new sport.”

This year’s show will be officially opened by the Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, Ken Skates, and organisers are promising even more glitz this year.

Sunseeker Yachts - whose cruisers have featured prominently in several Bond movie blockbusters - are returning with an even bigger vessel.

In addition, two other luxury motorboat makers, Fairline and Sealine, will also be dipping their toe in the water this year, along with high end sailboats from Hanse and Delher.

Meanwhile, there will be luxury cars from Rolls Royce, Bentley and McLaren and motorbikes from Harley Davidson and even a helicopter.

At the other end of the spectrum, there will be paddleboarding, coracles and bath-tub racing.

Bathtubbing expert Tony Bain prepares for the next round of the World Championships at Conwy during the All Wales Boat Show.

The show is being billed as a Celebration of Welsh Coast Life and the aim is to tap into the huge potential of the marine leisure industry which already pumps around £200 million into the Welsh economy every year.

A study following the inaugural All Wales Boat Show last year revealed £1 million of regional business had been done as a result of the event - including £620,000 in boat sales.

The 2014 event will be held over three days instead of five and will be staged on a single site on the Conwy side of the estuary instead of being split over two locations.

Davina Carey-Evans, Managing Director of show organisers Sbarc, was "very excited" by the prospects for this year's event.

She said: "The backdrop for the show is stunningly beautiful and the location just off the A55 is perfect in terms of accessibility.

"Things are coming together extremely well and it promises to be a fantastic event which will provide a foundation for building on the potential of the marine sector in creating wealth and employment."
