Wine lovers will be raising a glass or two in aid of a children’s hospice.

All the proceeds from the official opening of the new Wine Shop at Bodnant Welsh Food will to the Tŷ Gobaith hospice nearby in the Conwy Valley.

The connoisseurs will have the chance to sample over 50 fine wines from across the world during the international tasting session running throughout the day on Wednesday, April 2.

The Spring Tasting in Bodnant’s stylish Pochin Room from 11am-8pm, is being masterminded by Wine Shop and Wine Cellar Manager Tim Watson, who explained: “Wine tastings don’t usually give people the opportunity to sample so many types of wine as we will have on offer that day.

“Michael Vick, our wine consultant who has helped me to organise the event, and I are very proud to be offering 50 wines from all around the world, including Australia and New Zealand and some possibly less familiar but excellent varieties from countries such as Russia.

“We’ll also be inviting people to try our wide selection of Welsh wines, which are becoming increasingly popular these days.

“A team of experts, including myself, will be on hand to provide people with all the information they need to make their selection.

“It should be a brilliant occasion and I’m delighted that the proceeds will be going to Ty Gobaith which was established in 2004 to provide care and support to life-limited children, young people and their families from across north Wales.”

It offers a range of services, including respite and end-of-life care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Bodnant Welsh Food is a strong supporter of the hospice and has just handed over a cheque for £850 to its Fundraising Manager, Sarah Kearsely-Wooller MBE. The money was raised by Bodnant’s carrier bag charge and children’s Halloween party.

Sarah said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Bodnant Welsh Food, with their support including acting as hosts for our sell-out clay pigeon shoot on May 21 as well as well as providing donations from the carrier bag charge.

“In addition we are involved in their own events, with proceeds from the children’s Halloween party and now the Spring Wine Tasting.

“At Ty Gobaith – just 2.5 miles away – we are indebted to Bodnant Welsh Food for their continued commitment to  our work at the hospice, caring for life threatened babies, children, young people and their families.

“We really enjoy working alongside the Bodnant Welsh Food team and will do, especially in 2014,  when we are celebrating our 10th birthday.”

Tim, 37, who is originally from Bangor and now lives in Colwyn Bay, came to the world of fine wine after deciding to give his life a new focus after enjoying a successful career in television.

He explained: “I began working in TV production for the BBC in the year 2000, starting out as a runner in the development department and working my way up through the ranks.

“In 2003 I became a casting director with the drama department at the BBC’s headquarters at White City during which time I helped find faces to appear in some of the UK’s best loved drama series, including Eastenders and Doctors.

“Although I enjoyed the job, a few years ago I decided on a change of career direction. I’d caught the wine bug after visiting vineyards while travelling around Australia and New Zealand some years previously, so I went for wine.

“I moved back to North Wales from London in 2009 and had my specialist wine training with a major company in Bangor.

“Another reason for coming back to North Wales was that my wife Nicole and I have two young sons, Charlie George, who is four, and Jack Tomos, who is 18 months old, and we wanted them to have the same sort of lovely childhood that I had in this area.”

Tim added: “I was lucky enough to get the job at Bodnant and have spent a lot of  putting it together with the help of Michael Vick, our wine consultant. I’m in charge of the shop and the wine cellar which serves our Hayloft Restaurant.

“The shop is well stocked with wines from across the world, ranging in price from £5.50 to £118 a bottle, however I’d say that 35 to 40 per cent of our wines are under £10.

“All the bottles are displayed with a full description of what they are and how they taste and if people want more information about a particular bottle I’m always on hand to tell them all they need to know.

“I can also advise people who come into the shop on which wine is the perfect accompaniment to different foods. I believe you’ve got to get the right balance of food and wine.

“Our selection of Welsh wines is becoming increasingly popular and we have three producers whose products we stock, from Pembrokeshire, Montgomeryshire and Monmouthshire.

“We even have the Welsh equivalent of champagne, a sparkling wine made by the champagne method.

“Wine is an exciting world and I learn something new about it every day.

“For the Spring Tasting on April 2 we’ll have five of our suppliers on hand in the Pochin Room to give people all the information they need about the various wines available for sampling.”

Bodnant’s Spring Wine Tasting has a £5 entry fee and spaces can now be booked by calling 01492 651937.

Bodnant runs a wine school offering courses in wine discovery, appreciation, flavour association and food and wine matching. It also has a wine club which meets on the first Wednesday of every month.

Married dad of two bounces back with top job at Phones 4u in Wrexham

1202ANDY32 ceidiog

A married dad-of-two from Rhyl bounced back after the heartbreak of redundancy by netting the top job at a mobile phone store.

Andy Robertson, the newly appointed manager of the Phones 4u store at Eagles Meadow shopping centre, Wrexham, was devastated when he lost his job after photo retail giant, Jessops, went into administration.

He said: “It was very tough. It was just after Christmas so it was a bit of a shock.

“It was a real worry having kids and bills to pay. The effect it had on the family household budget was devastating.

Andy, 42, lives in Rhyl with his wife of 20 years Joanne, and their twin sons Steven and Daniel, 16. He started out as a Saturday worker at Iceland aged 16, and through grit and determination he has steadily worked his way up the retail ladder, becoming a manager within seven years.

He said: “There isn’t one job in the store I won’t do. If the staff do it, I’ll do it. For example if something needs to be cleaned I’ll do it. We all get involved. We all know what our roles are, and we all know how well we’re doing.

Andy believes in creating the right atmosphere at the store, and is dead set against high pressure sales tactics.

“I like a good place to work because if it’s a good place to work then it’s a good place to shop because the customers pick up on that sort of atmosphere. You want to come in and you want to feel comfortable. For a customer to sign a contract for two years they have to know that everything is right.

“If the staff are happy then it transfers on to the customers. We all know what we need to do.

“We get very good feedback from our customers. They talk about it being unrushed, and unpressured.

“We’re not going for the hard sell at all – quite the opposite. It’s counterproductive to go for the hard sell.

“It’s a big thing that people are signing for that can involve thousands of pounds. So it’s got to be right. It’s not a decision that people should rush into.

“We’ll sit down with the customer and we’ll get to know them. We work out their hobbies, their interests, what they do, how they use the phone, what they use the phone for, what they currently spend.

“Then we try and pick from that a couple of packages that would suite them. Sometimes by spending a pound more on your contract, it could save you £20 per month on your additional costs.”

Andy is also a great believer in staff training and product knowledge.

He said: “We do a lot of training. Product knowledge is essential because the technology is changing so quickly.

“It’s about keeping an open mind and realising that you’re always learning. You can’t presume that you know everything, not with technology. Because what’s current today is not current tomorrow, and I’ve learned a lot in the nine months that I’ve been with the company, and I must admit I’ve enjoyed every day.”

Army mum Pippa leads from the front for Help for Heroes in Swansea

Swansea representatives of the Help for Heroes charity have launched a major month-long charity event at a top city store.

Debenhams, in the busy Quadrant Shopping Centre, threw open its floorspace to the charity which supports wounded servicemen and their families.

The appeal launched on St David’s Day with fundraising led by Help for Heroes volunteers led by Pippa Sanders and will last throughout March.

Pippa, from Sketty, volunteered for Help for Heroes last year and she said: “My son, Joshua, joined up and is with the Royal Army Medical Corps and has just finished training. That’s what persuaded me to get involved.”

Joshua, 23, is now waiting for his first posting and his mum added: “It’s time for us to do our bit. They’re doing their bit for us out there or wherever they are and we should do something for them.

“We’ve got the Army Cadets helping us out and we’ve got wrist bands to give out and a selection of broaches and key-rings. It all helps.”

Their efforts are being replicated nationally with Debenhams aiming to raise a minimum of £75,000 nationally.

The Swansea store will also be supporting Help for Heroes with a range of limited edition merchandise. Exclusive sweatshirts and t-shirts for men by Red Herring will be available in store and online, ranging from £20-£35, with all profits being donated to the charity.

James Loxdale, store manager of Debenhams Swansea says: “We’re delighted to be supporting Help for Heroes. We kicked off with a fundraising weekend in store with the support of local Help for Heroes volunteers selling merchandise and collecting donations.”

Help for Heroes’ mission is to deliver a lasting national network of support for wounded servicemen and their families. The charity inspires and enables those who have made sacrifices on the countries behalf to achieve their full potential.

Mike Jewitt, Wales Co-ordinator for Help for Heroes, said: “Help for Heroes is hugely grateful to Debenhams for the amazing support it is giving us.

“What really makes the contribution stand out is the range of support provided; from allowing us to run a national collection weekend at stores, to developing a range of clothing in partnership with H4H.

“Servicemen and women who are injured today will still need our support tomorrow and in the days that follow, for the rest of their lives. They are still battling and we won’t let them battle alone.”

Top tenor Wynne Evans teams up with Bryn Terfel in Llangollen

Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, Thursday.Wynne Evans.

Top tenor Wynne Evans has landed an incomparable new role – singing alongside opera superstar Bryn Terfel in North Wales.

Wynne – best known as the waiter who belts out catchy jingles in the Go Compare TV ads – will be starring with the bass baritone in Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street at this summer’s Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

But first Wynne faces a mad dash from Covent Garden where he’ll be performing in the Richard Strauss opera, Ariadne auf Naxos, the night before at the Royal Opera House.

He’ll be joining Bryn and an all-Welsh cast in an English language production of the Sondheim classic on the opening night of the Llangollen Eisteddfod on Monday, July 7, that’s being sponsored by the Pendine Park care organisation.

According to Wynne, 42, Llangollen is one of his favourite places on the planet.

He explained: “Llangollen is a very special place and one of the most special places on earth for a week.

“I performed in a headline concert there a couple of years ago and also presenting BBC 2’s coverage of the festival for the last two years.

“Llangollen is a wonderful place to return to especially as I’m going to be performing with my old mate Bryn Terfel.

“I’m playing the role of Pirelli, Sweeney Todd’s arch rival who is slain by the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Luckily, Bryn and I are good friends or I might just take it personally!

“We both attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, although he was a few years ahead of me. So we have been good friends having know each other for a long time.”

Wynne, who was born in Carmarthen, was an established opera star long before he was picked to play Gio Compario for the Go Compare TV ads and has performed at many of the world’s top venues including the Royal Albert Hall.

The TV exposure, he says, has been a bonus when it comes to concert ticket sales.

He added: “It’s amazing really. Six years ago I was relatively unknown until of course Gio Compario came along. It doesn’t bother me though, I know I was a successful opera singer before he came along and I will continue performing in the future.

“I think about the attention I get as my being an ambassador for Wales actually. I have just been over to Dublin for the rugby international, I was working for a TV station, and, as usual, I got lots and lots of ‘Go Compare’ shouts from across the street.

“However, I feel quite honoured really. I know some artists and performers who get quite precious and don’t want to perform the very song that made them famous. I can never understand that, it just doesn’t make sense to me.

“People expect you to perform what they know you best for. What’s the point in disappointing people?

“I know a lot of people come along to concerts or opera performances I’m in as a direct result of seeing those TV ads so I am happy to celebrate that.

“And I’m filming a few more ads in the near future so you can expect to see Gio Compario back on your TV screens quite soon!”

Sweeney Todd was the perfect introduction for anybody who hasn’t seen live opera before.

He said: “It’s superb. Fast moving and menacing it’s got a bit of everything including murder and intrigue and the music is just sensational.”

This year’s Eisteddfod will also feature concerts by Dutch jazz sensation Caro Emerald and veteran British rockers Status Quo as well as a world premiere of a new work, Adiemus Colores, by top composer Karl Jenkins.

He will conduct his Latin American themed work with American tenor Noah Stewart, Venezuelan trumpeter Pacho Flores and Latvian accordion player Ksenija Sidorova to the accompaniment of the Llangollen International Eisteddfod Orchestra.

The Friday night concert, Spirit of Unity, will feature the Cape Town Opera, Africa’s premiere opera company, famed for their "vibrant vocalism and high-octane stage performances".

Appearing with them will be Wales’ representative in Cardiff Singer of the World, Gary Griffiths, the Wales Millennium Centre Only Kidz Aloud Chorus under the baton of celebrity conductor Tim Rhys Evans and British Sinfonietta, one of the UK's leading independent professional orchestras.

The Choir of the World competition for the Pavarotti Trophy on the Saturday night is the blue riband event of the week-long festival which will close with a Sunday night concert by Status Quo.
